Lost & found. We fear that as we grow up, we might lose our innocent, romantic self and turn into a calculating, cynical person. We live like a shadow, forget the little things in life that we used to treasure, and bury our feelings under a mask. And we know it, but we cannot do anything about it. We are waiting: waiting that someday, someone, or some events would save us and turn us back into our lost self.

Dreams & uncertainty. We want to pursue our dreams but uncertainty holds us back. We doubt if the dream is reachable. Even if we can reach it, we fear it might not be what we want, and all meaning will be lost. So we choose to idealize it and keep it as a dream while occupying ourselves with other things.

Distance & loneliness. Distance is not what’s separating people. We can be as close to each other as possible, or communicate thousand times a day, but still don’t get any closer to each other. Or the other way round, we don’t have to be together to feel connected to the another person. Loneliness is when we are disconnected from others, despite talking the same language and sharing the same space.

PS: The thoughts came after a brief discussion of the anime with Huibin,. Here is an earlier entry on the anime.

Update: This post is my interpretation of the themes the director want to touch upon. I might not agree with his view on the world, and tend to find myself torn between some incompatible worldview/ideals.  Nevertheless I think Shinkai Makoto does a nice job conveying certain emotions and aspects of inner struggle people have in a simple and idealistic way.  I also think the anime has a good ending. The protagonist smiles at the end. And through quitting his job, breaking up with a girlfriend he doesn’t connect with, and going back to feel the things he once care, I think he has found his original self.

(Beyond the Clouds, The Promised Place) on her msn made me want to watch this anime by Shinkai Makoto for the third time. But since I’m a bit short of time lately and there’re still plenty of things I want to do, I decided to just run the DVD and listen to the ending song. I discovered that Shinkai Makoto wrote the lyric, which fits well with the story theme.

Your Voice (Kimi no Koe)

The faded blue, the white clouds, the color of that faraway days

Deep inside my heart, there is a pain hidden from all.
I had put my all, the words had become distant
In the lost days, even now, you make me warm.
Your voice, your shape illuminated by the light
If it could happen
If my voice could reach you, whereever you are
I would live on

From the sundrenched rails, echo the voice of that distant day
Beyond the clouds, even now, the promised place is there
Since when, loneliness has surrounded me, clutched my heart
In the flow of time, I’m surely going to lose you.

Your hair, the world where sky and clouds blend, secrets abound
Your voice, your gentle fingers, and your flowing skin
Make my heart strong

Always, a shivered heart, your back
My wish is only that, my song would reach you, wherever you are
I would live on

Your voice, your shape illuminated by the light
If it could happen, even though we live in different places,
Gently and strongly
I would live on

(It’s rather irrational for me to stay up till 1am to translate this song given that I got to wake up at 6am for work. People are truly driven by emotions)

Movies that made my week

Mama Mia – Highly entertaining and took away all my tiredness after an 80 hours work week. It’s a movie you want to watch in a theatre. I can’t wait to get the soundtrack.

Gake no Ue no Ponyo (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) – Another gem by Miyazaki about nature, magic, and bonding. For those who’ve watched it or don’t mind spoilers, here’s a review.

Wall-E

I had high expectations for this anime and wasn’t disappointed. The anime is full of delicate portray of emotions and touches on some deeper themes (Spoilers ahead). The anime can easily to made into a dystopia in several ways if we think about the power of robot or people’s tendencies to behave in a situation portrayed in the anime.  On a personal level, Wall-E’s memory loss can be comparable with people with Alzheimer’s disease. If Wall-E didn’t get his memory back, is he the same being as the old Wall-E, and what to make of the shared experience between the two? Robot’s in general identical and replaceable as opposed to human being for now, but this would be questions we have to face if we can successfully make copies/uploads of ourselves in one way or another.
Here is an interview with the anime director with some quotes below:
it was literally born from the sentence, “What if humankind left earth and somebody left the last robot on, and it just kept doing the same futile thing forever?” And I thought that was the saddest, loneliest character I ever heard of in my life.
But definitely it had that first man, first female theme. But I wasn’t trying to replace man in the bigger story. I just loved the poetic-ness that these two machines held more care for living and loving than humanity had anymore.
The theme that I was trying to tap into was that irrational love defeats life’s programming—that it takes a random act of loving kindness to kick us out of our routines and habit. You could blame consumerism as one thing that’s happening in this film, but there’s a million other things we do that distract us from connecting to the person next to us and from furthering relationships, which is truly the point of living. So I came up with the idea that as WALL•E was picking up trash, it would have all these signs of humanity for him to rifle through, to get him interested in what humans were all about. I loved the idea of WALL•E finding something real. He was fascinated with the idea of living. And what’s the point of living? Something real. He was a manmade object with something real inside him. And he found something real while surrounded by manmade objects. That just was poetic for me.
I wasn’t trying to make the humans into fat, lazy consumers, but to make humanity appear to be completely consumed by everything that can distract you—to the point where they lost connection with each other, even though they’re right next to each other.

The main characters and the theme motivated me to watch this drama (the ending song ‘Canvas’ by Hirai Ken is nice too). I wasn’t sure whether I’d like it at first, but it gets better the farther into the story. The drama, based on a magna, portrays the college life of 5 art students. It touches upon themes that many people experience in their teens: friendship, love, passion, self-doubt, career direction, and separation. Some people don’t know what they want to do in life. Some know what they want but don’t know how to reach it or doubt whether they have what it takes. Others are confident in their ability but can’t find a place in the world that suits them. Idealist and people who can’t seem to grow pass their teenage mindset would probably like this drama.

Life would be much easier if we all have a map telling us where to go. The problem for many is that we don’t know where the goal is. And even when we think we find ourselves a goal, we often have doubts: Is it really what I want? Is it realistic and reachable? What should I do to make it happen? Do I have what it takes to make it happen? Is it really worth it (and back to the question is it what I really want)?

If we are lucky to figure out what we want in life, be it money, love, comfort, or status, there are still myriad of ways to get there. And we often don’t know which ways suit us best. We want a map in addition to a goal. Knowing where to go seems more important to me than knowing how because we can change course and move in a different direction as long as we keep the destination in mind. So the bigger problem seems to be self-doubt.

We feel frustrated and dissatisfied when we can’t seem to be able to put in the effort to live a life we want. We know that not just the process, but outcome matters as well. We also know that, contrary what many self-help book would like us to believe, there are things we can’t achieve no matter how much efforts we put in or have the correct mindsets and methods. Should we try or not, continue or give up? Will it be worth our efforts, time, and other sacrifices?

There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil betowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tired.

Ratatouille – Besides being enjoyable, this anime also touches on deeper themes about art, talent, and social constraint. It also provides a nice prospective on being a doer versus being a critic. The DVD has some good bonus features. I especially like the Fine Food & Film part, which shows the similarity of a chief and an anime director, who are both passionate in their works and try to perfect what they do.

BBC Planet Earth – amazing series showing the wonders and beauties of our planet. Make one stops to ponder the elegance of the universe, and also wants to travel more to experience them first hand.

Away from her – How important are time, shared experience, and memories in love? These are the few things I think about after watching this movie. To be more specific: Can we compare love that happens in a moment with love that has sustained for decades? Are our relationships still the same if our memories are altered? Do we need memories and shared experiences to say that the love is real?

Sweeney Todd – Horror or bloody movies are generally not my type. But I continue to like movies directed by Tim Burton. The setting in London is nicely created, and Johnny Depp remains a great actor.

Once

Once – An enjoyable film on a simple encounter and relationship (thank Asaka for the CD). Recommend for anyone who likes music or enjoy feeling the usual human nostalgia for the artistic, non-materialistic way of life (the good old simple and non complicated life most people romanticize).

I just watched the first part of the anime “秒速5センチメートル(5 Centimeters per Second)” directed by Shinkai Makoto. Shinkai Makoto’s one of my favorite anime makers. The illustrations in his anime are beautiful, with good background music, script, and animation. I’m particularly attracted to the theme in his anime (e.g. The Promised Place Beyond the Clouds, Voices of the Distant Stars). Many of his themes surround distance, loneliness, and connection between couples. I guess I like them as things he portrays seem to be the kind of beauty I’m searching for.

Here’s the theme song of the anime I recently translated:

【One more time, One more chance】by Yamazaki Masayoshi

Link of the song on YouTube

One more time ふざけあった時間よ

What more should I lose? To get my heart’s forgiveness
To what extent does it have to hurt? To meet you one more time
One more time, seasons please don’t dissappear
One more time, the time when we fool around
One more chance
One more chance
Time when we different in our opinions, I usually gave in first
Self-centered personality, still all the more I love you
One more chance, memories bind my steps
One more chance, the next place can’t be decided

I’m always searching, for your appearance somewhere
The home across the street, the back alley by the window
Even though I know you couldn’t possibly be there
If my wish could come true, at this momentI will go where you are
Things that couldn’t be done, there’ll benone
I’ll bet on everything to show you my embrace
One more time ふざけあった時間よ
If loneliness is what I want to avoid, anyone should be fine
Nights that the stars seem to be falling, I can’t feign myself
One more time, seasons please don’t pass away
One more time, the time when we fool around
I’m always searching, for your appearance somewhere
Whether at the crossroad, or in my dreams
Even though I know you couldn’t possibly be there
If miracle happens, I want to show it to you as soon as possible
A new morning, my self from now on
The word ‘I like you’ that I couldn’t say
Memories of the summer are revolving
Unexpectedly, the pulsating beat vanished
I’m always searching, for your appearance somewhere
At the dawn of the street in Sakuraki town
Even though I know you couldn’t possibly be there
If my wish could come true, at this moment I will go where you are
Things that couldn’t be done, there’ll be none
I’ll bet on everything to show you my embrace
I am always searching, for your pieces somewhere
Stores in my journey, at the newspaper’s corner
Even though I know you couldn’t possibly be there
If miracle happens, I want to show it to you as soon as possible
A new morning, my self from now on
The word ‘I like you’ that I couldn’t say
I end up always searching, for your smile somewhere
Somewhere around the railroad crossing
Even though I know you couldn’t possibly be there
If life could go back, No matter how many times I’ll go to where you are
Things that I want, there’ll be none
Besides you, not any more important things

Before Sunrise and The Moments

I watched a few good movies lately, but Before Sunrise (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112471/) is probably my recent favorite, portraying a transient relationship that’s so natural, beautiful, and idealistic. The firm is conversation-oriented so it may not suit everyone’s taste, but this seems to tell me that life’s about these small things (like conversation). First I thought I’ll watch the sequel right after, but now I think I’ll save it for a later time to let the beautiful encounter last for a while.

Life can be so dead, or so alive

So dull, or colorful

So fake, or real

So mundane, or extraordinary

A place, a time, a person

Can be so repetitive or so different

Happen or not happen

A slight difference that changes everything

A connection, a mutual feeling, or a share of understanding

Moments so honest and spiritual

Maybe the moment’s all there is

And living life’s finding the moments
