Recently, I have been wondering whether it is worth going to concerts and shows that start at night. They often end late and disrupt my sleep routine. For some concerts, I have listened to several renditions and largely know what to expect.

But the recent Persona 5 concert made me reconsider. Persona 5’s music, a mix of jazz and rock with a wide range of instruments, felt especially fun and engaging live. Lyn’s singing was fantastic, and the saxophone solos reminded me of my university band days.

Persona 5 was the first game I played in the Persona series, so it is particularly memorable to me. Spending long hours with the game immersed me in its world and music in a way that watching highlights or summaries never could. On one of my previous trips to Tokyo, we visited Sangenjaya to look for the cafe that inspired Sojiro’s cafe in the story, and had delicious curry and coffee there.

It is hard to know in advance whether a concert or show will be worthwhile. I think I can be more selective, perhaps skipping events where I know what to expect, while leaving room to explore different kinds of performances. Serendipity is a little like a treasure hunt. Once in a while, we come across something that excites or inspires us, and we feel glad that we kept exploring, even when there were costs and effort involved.

PS: Travel also requires effort, disrupts routine, and affects sleep, but is often worth it. Ryan Holiday thinks it’s always worth the trouble.

“This is the truth of our world. Memories melt in the morning light, and then, a new day begins. Roads stretch out before us. So many paths. Which do you choose? That’s up to you. Sometimes, you might run astray. You’ll stop, maybe cry in frustration. But, you know, that’s all right. For the roads…they go on without end. So look up, face forward, toward your chosen horizon, and just walk on.” – Noah

Noah: Do you think an off-seer can ever reach others? You know. I thought our lives were like our music, always in our hands, under our control. I wasn’t facing the truth. Even if I could reach people, I wouldn’t be able to save them. I should’ve known that. It’s unbearable, seeing lives slip away from you. Even though they’re right there. What am I even doing?

Mio: It’s dark out, huh? No moon.

Noah: Huh?

Mio: But the starlight. It’s so nice and warm…Hey, when the two of us first met, you asked me if I wanted to survive…I replied I didn’t mind either way…I’ll correct that. Now I want to live. To live, and learn, a whole lot more. Noah, there’s so much for us to see.

Noah: Finally. You called me by my name.

Mio: Oh yeah. Sorry. I guess I felt that if I did, my heart would downright break. Because I’d be admitting the truth…But you know, these feelings that grew within me. They’re thanks to you. That’s why you’re not allowed to say it’s been for nothing. You’ve enriched my life, Noah. That’s clear now…You know, I don’t want this to be it. If I were given the chance, if this road I’ve walked were to keep on going, I’d like to spend that time with my Noah.

No Promises to Give

Walking city streets with worn cobblestones
Listening to people rushing past to rhythms all their own
Life passing me by, not thinking how the years have flown
Until I met you

I won’t say that it was fate
I won’t say that it was destiny
But if not, what could it be that drew you towards me?
Could it be chance?

Till the day that we meet again
Where or when?
I wish I could say
But believe—know that you’ll find me
Promises to keep, we won’t ever need

If only I’d never known
All the burdens I was born to bear
Lived a life without a care in the world safe for you…
But that won’t do

Till the day that we meet again
On our street, I want to believe
In the chance that we’ll share a glance
Promises to keep, we won’t ever need
