When a Late Night Is Worth It

Recently, I have been wondering whether it is worth going to concerts and shows that start at night. They often end late and disrupt my sleep routine. For some concerts, I have listened to several renditions and largely know what to expect.
But the recent Persona 5 concert made me reconsider. Persona 5’s music, a mix of jazz and rock with a wide range of instruments, felt especially fun and engaging live. Lyn’s singing was fantastic, and the saxophone solos reminded me of my university band days.
Persona 5 was the first game I played in the Persona series, so it is particularly memorable to me. Spending long hours with the game immersed me in its world and music in a way that watching highlights or summaries never could. On one of my previous trips to Tokyo, we visited Sangenjaya to look for the cafe that inspired Sojiro’s cafe in the story, and had delicious curry and coffee there.
It is hard to know in advance whether a concert or show will be worthwhile. I think I can be more selective, perhaps skipping events where I know what to expect, while leaving room to explore different kinds of performances. Serendipity is a little like a treasure hunt. Once in a while, we come across something that excites or inspires us, and we feel glad that we kept exploring, even when there were costs and effort involved.

PS: Travel also requires effort, disrupts routine, and affects sleep, but is often worth it. Ryan Holiday thinks it’s always worth the trouble.

Dark dreadful reality;

A microcosm of life’s messiness: First love, fate, misunderstanding, sacrifices needed to fulfill one’s potential, nostalgia, regrets, and importance of timing.

Sometimes life is like a dream. It doesn’t make much sense, yet is interspersed with beautiful melodies.

Song by Stefanie Sun
Lyrics:
I hear the winter leaving.
I wake up in some year, some month.
I think, I wait, I look forward to,
But that’s not how the future is arranged.
Cloudy sky, an evening, outside the car window.
There is a person waiting in the future.
To the left, to the right, to the front I look.
How many corners must love turns before it arrives?
Who will I meet, what are we going to say?
The person I’m waiting for, how far away is he in the future?
I hear the wind blowing from the subway and the crowd.
I’m standing in line, holding a number plate for love.
I keep flying and flew across a sea of time.
We both had been injured in love.
I’m watching the road, the entrance to the dream is a bit narrow.
Meeting you is the most beautiful accident.
One day, my riddle will unravel.

“Look at me. See me as more than a friend. Whether it’s tomorrow, next week, or next month, I’ll always be waiting” — Hina’s thought
Song with lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y5Hx0y0S9A
Taiki: I can’t be with you
Hina: No. I told you I didn’t need an answer right now. You don’t need to rush it. It’s not like you’re gonna start dating Chinatsu Senpai, right?
Taiki: No, but…
Hina: Then you don’t need to give me your answer yet. I won’t complain, no matter how long it takes. if you reject me now, you might regret it later when you realise you’re in love with me.
Taiki: Maybe so, but I don’t think this dynamic we have now is a good one. You say it’s okay for me to take my shot with Chinatus Senpai. But with the way things are now, I can’t pursue my feelings honestly. Even though I like Chinatus Senpai, I feel ashamed of myself for still being drawn to you. And I think my indecisiveness is only hurting you. So let me just make things clear. We should both just–
Hina: I said it’s fine! I know you liked someone else when I told you how I felt. Even if you like her, I still love you!
Taiki: That’s not a natural way to be.
Hina. It’s natural! It’ll all make sense once I can get you to look at me!
Taiki: I told you I can’t reciprocate your feelings.
Hina: Why not? You have way more memories with me. Is it because we don’t live together? Then we could start now. I don’t know how Chinatus Senpai feels about you, but I —
Taiki: Even so. It won’t change who I like.

This is my second time performing with Sky, serving as his accompanist for his recital. I wasn’t as nervous as before, but during the performance, I still felt my heart racing and leg shaking. I told myself that nothing really matters–especially after 100 years–and no one cares how I perform. I should just play freely and enjoy the moment with my son. If it turns out well and brings others joy, that’s an added bonus. Before I started, I also tried to imagine Kiki flying over a town by the ocean.
There’s a child who performed before us in the recital who didn’t care how others perceive him. He might not have had the best technique, but he played with confidence, and everyone could see that he was enjoying himself. I think he’s cool, and I hope to be more like him someday.

| Original / Romaji Lyrics | English Translation |
|---|---|
| Yasashii hidamari ni chaimu ga direi suru Hoho wo naderu kaze ibuki wa fukakunatteku | In that gentle spot warmed by the sun, the chime is delayed The wind brushing my cheeks turns into my deep breath |
| Toomawari no namida namae tsuketa ashita Kasanaru miraiiro no rain | Roundabout tears, the tomorrow we named Are all overlapping future-colored lines |
| Adokenai konna kimochi mo Hajiketobu hodo waraiaeta hi mo Taisetsu ni sodateteikeru youni Togiretogire no toki wo koete Takusan no hajimete wo kureta Tsugatteyuke todoke | These childish feelings The days we laughed together happily I hope we come to treasure them You surpassed this disconnected time And gave me lots of firsts I’ll connect them to you, I’ll reach you |
| Houkago no yuuyami warau kimi no senaka Hisokana sasayaki fureta koto no nai omoi no naka | The after school sunset, your back, as you’re laughing Secret whispers, inside these untouched feelings |
| Boku no naka no kimi to kimi no naka no boku de Karamaru miraiiro no rain | The you inside of me, and the me inside of you Are all interweaving future-colored lines |
| Ameagari no machi no nioi to Yumemitaina himitsu wo mune ni daite Nandomo nakisou ni natte mata warau Kangaeru yori zutto hayaku Sono mune ni tobikometara ii Tsunagatteyuke todoke | The smell of the town after the rain And the dream-like secret I hold in my heart So many times I’ve felt like crying, but then laughed instead Rather than thinking about it, hurry up It’s fine if you just fly into my heart To connect to you, to reach you |
| Nani yori mo daijina kimi no mae de Kizutsukanai youni daiji ni shiteta no wa sou jibun Sono hitogoto ga moshimo sayonara no kawari ni natteshimattemo Ari no mama subete | In front of you, cherished more than anyone is someone who cherishes you so that you won’t get hurt, that’s right, it’s me Even if your words somehow become “goodbye” instead Everything will be as it is |
| Adokenai konna kimochi mo Hajiketobu hodo waraiaeta hi mo Taisetsu ni sodateteikeru youni Honno sukoshi otona ni natteku Kimi ni naritai boku wo koete Tsunagatteyuke Ima sugu kimi ni Todoke | These childish feelings The days we laughed together happily I hope we come to treasure them I’ll become just a little grown up Surpassing the me that wants to be just like you To connect to you Right now to reach you |
